International Standard ISO

A private organization established in Geneva, Switzerland on 23 February 1947 under Article 60 of the Swiss Civil Code to promote global harmonization of ISO (International Organization for Standardization) standards and related activities, develop/issue international standards, arrange information exchange between member agencies and technical committees

Purpose

Promote global standardization and the development of related activities to promote international exchange of goods and services and promote cooperation in intellectual, scientific, technical and economic activities (Article 2 of the ISO Articles of Incorporation)

Performance tasks
  • Measures to promote global harmonization of standards and related activities
  • Developing and publishing international standards to ensure that these standards are used globally
  • Arranging the exchange of information on the work of member institutions and technical committees
  • Cooperate with other international organizations interested in related issues, especially if requested, through research on standardization projects
  • Cooperation with other international organizations through research on standardization projects
Members

Separate into regular members, associate members, and publication subscription members

  • Regular members are representative national standard institutions in the field of standardization in each country, and national standard institutions permitted to enter ISO under ISO procedural regulations
  • In countries without full membership, national institutions interested in standardization can register as members of publications without voting rights (only one institution in a country can qualify)

Membership Status: A total of 167 countries (as of January 2023)

  • Regular membership: 126 countries
  • Correspondent Members: 38 countries
  • Subscriber Members: 3 countries
  • Korea's joining year: 1963
Fiscal

ISO's financial resources are provided by the contributions and contributions of member institutions and the sale of publications. Whether to accept financial resources obtained from other sources (gifts, etc.) shall be determined by the board of directors. The fiscal year shall be the calendar year, and on April 1 of the following year,

  • Official languages: English, French, and Russian (Russian member institutions are obliged to provide all Russian interpreters and translations)

General Assembly

It is ISO's highest decision-making body and is held once a year.A member state may send a delegation of not more than three persons and resolve matters concerning the opening and closing of ISO articles and regulations, approval of various reports, selection of the board of directors and executives, etc Under the General Assembly, the General Assembly Advisory Committee (CASCO), the Consumer Policy Committee (COPOLCO), the Developing Countries Committee (DEVCO), the Regional Liaison Officer (RLO), and the Information Committee (INFCO) are established.

Council

It consists of 18 board members and chairmen appointed by the General Assembly and holds a board meeting three times a year The board of directors deliberates/decides on the approval of new ISO members, approval of reports from the Ministry of Technology and Management, and appointment of ISO executives

Technical Management Board (TMB)

The Secretariat is located in Geneva, Switzerland, consisting of the Secretary-General and staff from each country The Secretary-General is produced by the Board of Directors and acts as a signatory on behalf of ISO as the head of the Central Secretariat The Central Secretariat oversees ISO administration and meeting-related matters

Technical Committee (TC)

The actual technical work of ISO is carried out through the technical committee, and the technical management department approves the establishment or dismantling of the technical committee or sets the scope of the work The Technical Committee consists of an executive secretary, a chairman, and members (regular members and associate members).
